Action Commands

Super Mario RPG guide hub

Action Commands make attacks stronger and reduce damage in the Nintendo Switch version of Super Mario RPG. Learn the rhythm of your current weapons before a difficult boss: changing weapons can change the moment when you need to press the button.

Time normal attacks

Choose Attack, select your target, and press A at the moment your character’s attack connects. Watch the weapon and the impact rather than repeatedly tapping the button. A successful timed hit improves the attack; a perfectly timed input in the remake also damages the other enemies.

Practice on familiar enemies when you obtain a new weapon. Mario’s gloves, hammers and shells have different animations, so the timing you learned with one weapon may not carry over unchanged. If you keep missing, make one deliberate input per attack and adjust it slightly earlier or later on the next attempt.

Defend against enemy attacks

During an enemy attack that allows defense, press A just before the hit lands. Successful timing reduces damage, while a perfect defensive input can prevent damage from a blockable attack. Watch the attacker’s animation and the final approach to your character.

Some attacks and spells cannot be blocked. If one repeatedly damages the party despite your attempts, check the attack’s behavior and improve your equipment or healing plan instead of assuming every hit can be canceled. Enter difficult battles with enough HP to survive imperfect timing.

Follow each Special Move’s command

Special Moves use their own inputs. Read the prompt: some ask you to press at a particular moment, others use repeated presses or a held input. Do not apply your normal weapon timing to every spell.

For Mario’s Super Jump, keep pressing in time with the landings to extend the attack. For Peach’s healing and revival moves, successful timing improves the recovery. Spending FP without a perfect input does not mean the move has no effect, so do not abandon an otherwise useful healing turn just because your timing is still developing.

Build a chain without losing your recovery plan

Successful Action Commands build a chain and help fill the Action Gauge used for Triple Moves. The active characters influence the party bonuses. Choose a team that suits the encounter, then keep watching the enemy turns as carefully as your own attacks.

A full gauge gives you an option, rather than an obligation to attack immediately. During a dangerous boss battle, a defensive or recovery Triple Move may be more useful than additional damage. Keep enough shared FP for Peach’s next heal or revival, even when another attack could extend your offensive turn.
