Gloomy Woods — Wiggler, Berries and Bomb Buds

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam guide hub

After defeating Paper Petey Piranha on Sunbeam Plains, the northern exit takes you to the Gloomy Woods. The dense forest forms the only known connection to Mount Brrr, where Bowser Jr. and Papier-Bowser Jr. hold the two princesses captive. Already at the entrance you can see that the landscape differs significantly from the previous areas. Large tree stumps serve as natural platforms, luminous mushrooms grow between the paths and some tree trunks can only be moved with the common abilities of Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario. In addition, numerous paper dwellers have lost their way into the forest, so that you will also encounter paper ninjis and paper spear bearers in addition to ordinary opponents.

Immediately after entering the forest you reach a small Toad village. Before we make our way to the mountain, we first examine the buildings and collect the already accessible objects. This is especially worthwhile because another clever toad is waiting for you in the village, who gives three precious beans as a reward for his quiz. In addition, you can update your equipment and heal yourself completely on the Heart-Block before the actual obstacles of the forest begin.

Toad Village in Gloomy Woods

First, move left to the large tree stumps and jump up the low wooden platforms. On the left trunk is a? Block containing two super fungi. Then follow the upper path east to the tree stumps between the Lakitu Info Center and the Fighting Card Store. Here you will find two more blocks, which together contain 60 coins. To the right of the battle card store is there also a? Block with 50 coins. Open it and then go to the shops in the northern part of the village.

The equipment store now offers stronger boots, hammers and clothes. Paper Mario in particular can benefit from better equipment, as his copies regularly have to intercept damage in the coming boss fights. Compare the new items with your previous equipment before you buy something. Do not only pay attention to the attack value, but also to defense and speed. Some Enemies in Gloomy Woods have comparatively fast attacks, which is why an earlier turn of your own can be quite helpful. In the item store you should also take enough super mushrooms, nuts and syrup glasses. Especially for the coming fights, a sufficient BP stock is worthwhile, as you will repeatedly resort to pair and trio attacks.

East of the shops is next? Block pair on a raised tree stump. Jump up and take the 50 coins with you. Then you enter the easternmost house. There lives another clever Toad, who like his relatives in the previous areas a quiz. For successful completion, you must answer at least three of five randomly selected questions correctly. There is no time limit for the normal variant, so you can read through the answer options in peace.

The Toad Quiz and Three Tempo Beans

The questions deal with the adventures of Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario so far. Among other things, the Toad wants to know which symbol is shown on the signs of the item stores, which item increases the defense or which Enemies can not fly. The correct answers in these cases are Mushroom, Defense-Bean and Goomba. On another question you should know what becomes of a parakoopa without wings. The answer is an ordinary Koopa. In addition, one can ask about the three shapes of Kamek’s magic bullets: in addition to circle and square, the triangle is also part of it. For questions about the current question number, on the other hand, you have to count yourself, as this can change from passage to passage.

If you have answered at least three questions correctly, the Toad gives you three tempo beans. These permanently increase the speed value of a character and are therefore particularly valuable. You can use them immediately or save them for a later section. The more difficult version of the quiz can then be played again via the Lakitu Info Center. There, all eight questions must be answered correctly, and a time limit of ten seconds per question applies. For the normal progress of action, the first successful run is sufficient, but for the later complete mission collection we will also consider the more demanding variant.

Then leave the house and go to the southeastern part of the village. Is there one last one? Block with 50 coins. Then you walk back to the center of the village. Near the north exit is a Heart-Block, which allows you to completely fill up the HP and BP of your entire group. Use it and then follow the upper way north into the actual Gloomy Woods.

Kamek Devastates the Forest

As soon as Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario have left the village, Kamek appears and blocks the way to Mount Brrr. With his magic, he drops several huge cardboard constructions from the sky, which pile up between the trees and block all northern passages. Ordinary jumps and even the Trio Hammer do nothing against these obstacles. Kamek is thrilled with his work and then disappears again, while the three heroes stand in front of a seemingly insurmountable mountain of garbage.

First, go west. There you will meet a large green wiggler who considers himself a protector of the forest. He does not like the many cardboard obstacles at all, after all Kamek has polluted his homeland. In fact, Wiggler could easily remove the obstacles with his strong body, but he is completely starved and does not have enough energy. Starlow therefore suggests bringing him some food. Follow the path to the left of Wiggler and examine the nearby tree. A large red berry hangs on it, which you can reach with the Trio Grab. Pull them off the tree and hand them over to Wiggler.

After eating the berry, Wiggler suddenly gains new strength. He straightens up and races through the forest, removing several of the major cardboard obstacles. Follow him north. However, his new energy does not last very long. A few steps later, Wiggler sets out in the middle of the road and explains that he has fallen hungry again. This time, a single berry is no longer enough. He demands ten more berries before he is ready to clear his way to Mount Brrr. We must therefore fully explore the now accessible areas of the forest.

The first five berries

Start at the point where Wiggler blocks the path. First follow the coin trail north and open it? Block at the top for ten coins. Then return to the first meeting point with Wiggler in the west. Here is a larger water gap, which you can cross with the Trio Grab. Stand in front of the red wire on the opposite side and drag the entire trio over. Just to the right of the landing site is another one? Block with ten coins. Take them and then follow the ascending path to the tall tree stumps in the north.

On the upper platform you can see a large tree with three berries hanging on it. Stand right next to the tribe and use the Trio Hammer. Through the joint blow, the tree is strongly shaken and all three berries fall down. Collect them. So you already have three of the ten berries needed. You should remember this place, because later we have to change several times between the lower paths and the raised tree stumps.

Then go west and follow the path south. There is a large tree stump across the passage. Stand in front of it and strike against it with the Trio Hammer. This moves the trunk and falls over so that you can reach the underlying lead. Follow the new path to its end. On the opposite side, the fourth berry hangs over a gap. With ordinary jumps you do not come. Therefore, use the trio grave and pull the berry over to you.

After that, return to the middle forest path and head north at the next intersection. To your right is another berry on a high tree. Stand as close as possible to the edge of the path and use the Trio Grab again to bring them down. You have five berries. Then continue north into the next forest section, where we will find the remaining five.

The sixth berry and the upper platforms

In the following area you will first find a large circle of flowers. Jump on the little lead over it and open it? Block for 50 coins. East of it, a large gray crystal block blocks the passage. Destroy him with the Trio Hammer and go to the edge of the exposed platform. On the opposite side hangs the sixth berry. Drag them over to you with the Trio Grab.

Follow the row of flowers to the east. In front of you is a large jumping plate that leads to a much higher platform. Take the sprint socks and run over the flowers directly to the jumping plate. If you have built up enough speed, Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario will be thrown up together. On the upper platform, several paper ninjis and paper spear carriers await you. Especially the ninjis can become unpleasant because they adapt to repeated attack patterns. Therefore, switch between jump, hammer and bros. Attacks instead of constantly using the same technique. Against the paper spearheads you should pay attention to their weapons and attack with the hammer if necessary.

After the fights, follow the upper way south. This returns you on an elevated platform to the previous forest section, which you could not reach from the ground. Next to the entrance is a? Block with ten coins. Open it and then stand on the eastern edge. There, the seventh berry hangs over a larger gap. Use the trio grave to pull them over to you.

Now go south on the elevated route. Nearby is a parakoopa that carries another berry. As soon as you approach, he moves west and tries to put her out of reach. Do not pursue him via the lower paths, but stay on the platform and point the trio grave at the berry. As soon as the parakoopa passes close enough, you pull it directly from his hands. You have collected the eighth berry and only have to find two more.

The last two berries

Now return via the northern exit to the area with the large spring plate. Run over the row of flowers again and let yourself be catapulted to the upper platforms. This time you follow the elevated path first to the east. At the end is a? Block with 50 coins. Open it and then go west on the same platform. There is another big gray crystal block that you can destroy with the Trio Hammer.

Behind the obstacle, the ninth berry floats over the water. Stand on the sidelines and get them with the Trio Grab. Then follow the upper path as far east as possible. At the end, another gray rock block blocks the passage. Destroy him with the Trio Hammer and collect the tenth and last berry behind it.

With this you have found all ten berries that Wiggler demands for his next energy boost. In total, we collected eleven berries: the first immediately after getting to know each other and another ten during the subsequent search. Return to Wiggler via the well-known platforms and springboards. If you have already fully explored the last uncovered paths, you do not have to make any additional detours on the way.

Wiggler wants a melon

Speak to Wiggler and give him the ten collected berries. He devours them enthusiastically and then feels strong enough to clean up the forest. However, just as Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario wish to move on, Wiggler discovers a yellow Yoshi carrying a giant melon through the forest. The sight immediately awakens his appetite. Although he has just eaten ten berries, Wiggler wants to have this melon as a dessert. Without her, he does not want to continue running and is again in the middle of the road.

Before you leave the forest, you should explore a small byway southeast of Wiggler’s position. Between the trees is a narrow, easily overlooked passage. Follow him to the southeastern corner of the area. It says a? Block with a Koopa clothes for Mario or Luigi. Compare their values with your previous equipment and take them directly with you, because later there is no reason to return to the place just because of this block.

Then go back to Toad Village. Follow the goal arrow on your card until you find the yellow Yoshi. Mario and Luigi try to ask him for the melon at first, but Yoshi has a different idea. He only wants to give them away if the three brothers defeat him in a race. Since we need the melon for Wiggler, we naturally accept his challenge.

Race against Yoshi

The race takes several paths of the Toad village and combines the well-known sprint socks with new acceleration fields. Lakitu explains the most important rules before the start and shows the planned route on the touchscreen. It is crucial that you reach a checkpoint on the way before finally returning to the destination. So it is not enough to simply choose a shorter route through the village. Especially the acceleration fields can give you a big advantage if you use them in the right direction.

Start the race with a sprint to the southeast and follow the flower row first. Jump over the low tree stumps and stay on the specified path if possible. Once you reach the wooden platforms, follow them north. Behind it begins a series of acceleration fields that transport you first to the east, then to the south and then again to the east. Pay attention to the direction of the arrows before entering a field. As soon as your group is accelerated, you should run straight ahead and avoid abrupt changes of direction. Otherwise, you lose some of your speed and Yoshi can catch up again.

Then cross the bridge to the east and walk north to the checkpoint. Circumvent the flag completely so that the intermediate status is registered. Only then does the return path towards the starting area begin. You have to run mostly northwest now. Make sure that some acceleration fields now point in the wrong direction and would slow you down. Avoid such fields rather than walk blind over all arrow surfaces.

On the way back, you reach a large mud stain that slows down the movement greatly. Use the joint jump here and keep the group in the air as long as possible to cross a large part of the muddy area. Just before the equipment store there are two further acceleration fields. Use the field behind the jumping plate to get over the last muddy section and reach the finishing straight. If you used the acceleration fields correctly and did not make any major detours on the way back, you should finish before Yoshi.

During the race, Yoshi occasionally tries to make your way more difficult with a strong jump. If you are too close to him, his landing can cause a small shock wave. Jump over it in time if it lands immediately in front of you. However, the easiest way is to build up a lead on the first half of the race, so that Yoshi does not even come close to your group.

After your victory, Yoshi leaves the huge melon to you. The game will then automatically return you to Wiggler. The large forest dweller is overjoyed, devours his dessert and finally receives enough energy to continue walking. With his new strength, he races through the next cardboard obstacles and clears the way to the eastern part of the Twilight Forest.

The Eastern Forest and the Silver Statue

Follow Wiggler through the newly opened passage to the east. Just behind the entrance leads a small path north to a? Block with ten coins. Open it and then go to the row of flowers in the southeast. There is a large tree stump, in the side of which there is a noticeable crack. Mario and Luigi don’t fit through, so you’re sending Paper Mario in alone. Is there a hidden inside waiting? Block with a silver statue, a valuable piece of equipment. Take them and then return to the two brothers.

Then go north. Wiggler is already waiting in front of a huge electric gate. The construction is powered by an electric accumulator on the top and cannot be destroyed by normal hammer strikes or by Wiggler’s power. As long as the memory is active, the path to Mount Brrr remains blocked. To the right of the gate, however, you recognize an unusual plant with a large round bud. It is a kawumm flower whose explosive fruit is strong enough to destroy the gate’s power supply. We must first find a way to it.

The folded bridge and Nabbit

Follow the path to the left of the gate. Is there an elevated platform? Block with 50 coins. If you go from there through the western exit to the previous forest section, you will also reach a previously inaccessible crystal block with origami boots for Paper Mario. Open it now before you dedicate yourself to the actual gate.

Return to the Stromtor and walk southeast of it to the folded wooden bridge. Stand in front of the bridge edge and use the Trio Hammer. Through the joint stroke of all three characters, the bridge folds down and forms a transition to the other side. Cross them and you meet an old acquaintance: Nabbit. The fugitive thief still has some of the stolen Bros. Attacks and seems to have set up a new hiding place near the Kawumm flowers.

Follow him first on the small platforms. Nabbit finally jumps on a high rock surrounded by water and seems unattainable to Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario. Before you dedicate yourself to it, however, you should examine the southern byway. Here are several coins on the tree stumps. Follow them and open it? Block for another 50 coins. Also use the Trio Hammer on the bridge so that it is already open for the later way back.

Outsmarting Nabbit and Getting Bomb Derby

Then return to the Kawumm Flower in the eastern area. Stand on the raised platform immediately to the right of the plant and use the Trio Tomb to pick the explosive bud. Once you take it, its fuse begins to burn down. Therefore, you only have a few seconds to transport them to the desired destination. Run east with the Kawummbloom and stand directly south of Mopsies rocks. Point the trio grave at the stone and throw the bomb at it.

The explosion destroys the rock on which Nabbit stands and throws the thief in the air completely surprised. He then runs away and loses another stolen Bros. Attack. This time Mario gets the bomb derby. This also completes the Nabbit encounter in Gloomy Woods. At the same time, the destroyed rock formation opens up a new path that we need for further exploration.

This is how the bomb derby works

In the bomb derby, Mario and Luigi work together again. Luigi holds a pile of small bombs while Mario stands by with his hammer. Move the sliding pad to the right so that Luigi throws a bomb at Mario. As soon as she arrives, you press A to hit her with the hammer on the Enemies. Then you throw the next bomb with Luigi immediately. What is crucial is an even rhythm between the throwing and the hammer strike. If you wait too long, the remaining bombs explode and the attack ends prematurely. In total, you can shoot twelve bombs, the last one being particularly large and causing additional damage.

The attack requires seven BP and is great against stronger Enemies. All bombs cause fire damage, which is why the bomb derby is particularly effective against paper enemies and other fire-sensitive Enemies. We will be the new Bros. Attack can soon be used against a larger boss.

Turn off the first power gate

Take the path back to the Kawumm Flower created by the explosion. To the right of this is a second plant, the explosive fruit of which we now need for the power gate. Pick them with the Trio Grab and then run west as quickly as possible. Follow the raised log to the left side of the electric gate. Stand there on the edge and point the trio grave on the electricity storage on the top. Throw the kawumm flower against it before its fuse is completely burned down.

The explosion destroys the memory and turns off the power supply of the gate. Wiggler immediately realizes that the path is now free, and races through the passage. He also removes the next cardboard obstacles. Follow him through the open gate into the eastern part of the forest.

The Second Electric Gate

In the next forest section, several Fire-Piranha plants await you. They can attack several characters simultaneously with their fireballs and possess a higher life energy than the ordinary plants from the previous areas. Avoid their shells with timely jumps and use strong bros if possible. Attacks to take them off quickly. The new bomb derby attack is especially practical here if you already master its rhythm. Since the Enemies can survive fire attacks themselves well, you should also use normal hammer and jump attacks.

Go northeast from the entrance and open it? Block for 50 coins. Northwest of it is another crystal block with ten coins. Then follow the path north until Wiggler waits again in front of a large electric gate. This time, the obstacle has two power accumulators, which must be switched off independently. A single kawumm flower is no longer enough. You must destroy the left and right energy sources one after the other before Wiggler can continue his way.

Before we attack the two energy storage units, we take a small detour west. Follow the flower row through the western exit into the previous forest section. Is there an ordinary one? Block with 50 coins. A little further away is also a hollow tree stump with a narrow crack. Send Paper Mario inside and open the hidden Block with two super-syrup glasses. Then you return to the big gate.

Destroying the left power storage

For the left power storage you first go northwest. There, an elevated tree trunk leads over several muddy soil places. Follow the trail to its southern end. This is where the first required kawumm flower grows. Pick them with the Trio Grab and then move north as quickly as possible. The mud slows Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario considerably. Therefore, try to bypass the muddy areas as far as possible or to overcome them with common jumps.

At the northern end of the tree trunk you can reach an elevated platform directly next to the power gate. Stand on the edge and point the trio grave on the left power storage. Throw the Kawummbloom against it. Once the explosion has destroyed the memory, the electric discharge on the left side of the gate disappears. However, the right memory remains active, which is why the passage is still blocked.

The right side and the loading gloves

Return to the central path and head northeast. There you reach an elevated platform, from which you can jump over a small abyss to the right. With the sprint socks, make sure you get started and use the team jump so that all three characters reach the opposite side. Is it in the Northeast? Block with loading gloves for Mario or Luigi. Open it directly and compare the item with your current equipment. Then you go south.

Along the way, a large gray boulder blocks the passage. Destroy it with the Trio Hammer and follow the elevated route up to a circular mark on the ground. Directly behind it grows the second kawumm flower. Before you pick it up, you should take a close look at the following path, because the fuse leaves you only little time.

Pick the Kawummbloom with the Trio Grab and immediately run north. Jump down from the raised projection onto the path below. There are three spring plates next to each other. Stay focused on the right jumping plate. She hurls you onto a higher trunk that leads directly to the Stromtor. Once you have landed on top, you run northwest to the edge and throw the Kawummbloom with the trio grave on the right power storage.

The explosion also destroys the second energy source. The great gate loses its electric voltage and the way to the north is finally free. If the kawumm bloom explodes on the way, you just have to return to the plant and pick up a new one. It is best to avoid unnecessary changes of direction and stick to the described route via the right jumping plate.

Destroying Kamek’s force field

No sooner have Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario both turned off power storage, Kamek reappears. The wizard is annoyed that his carefully erected obstacles have now been destroyed again. In order to finally stop the three brothers, he erects a large magical force field directly in front of the open passage. Then he floats on his broom through the forest and challenges you to a small game of skill. This time you must meet him with three Kawumm flowers while he tries to stop you with his magic bullets.

For the first hit you go to one of the nearby Kawumm flowers and pick it with the Trio Grab. Then observe where Kamek is floating and move to a favorable throwing position. The markings on the ground show you from which points you can reach it particularly well. Point the Trio Tomb at the Wizard and throw the Kawumm Blossom as soon as you have a clear view of it. Be careful not to be hit by one of his bullets in the middle of the throw.

The Second Kawumm Flower

After the first hit, Kamek becomes more cautious. He now protects himself with a magical sign that wards off ordinary attacks and prematurely thrown Kawumm flowers. Therefore, wait until he himself prepares an attack. Just before Kamek fires his magic bullets, his force field opens for a moment. Then you have to throw the Kawummbloom. It is best to stay in a favorable position and set the Trio Grab on the wizard early. As soon as his sign disappears, you trigger the throw.

If you catch the right moment, the explosion hits Kamek a second time. Then he flies even more angrily through the forest and changes his attack patterns. For the next attempt, collect a new kawumm flower and first observe its movements before returning to one of the markers.

Three Kameks at once

On the third pass, Kamek uses another trick. He creates two copies of himself, so that now three seemingly identical wizards fly through the eastern forest section. Only one of them is the real Kamek. Observe the trajectories of the three figures and wait until they briefly interrupt their movement or reach a favorable position. Once you have a free throw track, you throw a kawumm flower at the right wizard.

It is especially important that you do not let yourself be distracted by the simultaneously flying magic bullets. If possible, keep moving when Kamek attacks and use the short breaks between his shells to improve your position. If the group is hit three times, the task fails and must be started again. However, the previous movement sequences remain the same, so that you already know when the individual attacks take place on the next attempt.

After the third successful goal, Kamek can no longer prevent his defeat. He loses control of the force field and flies furiously away. The magic barrier disappears and the path to the northern forest section is finally free. Wiggler immediately runs ahead to eliminate the last cardboard obstacles. Then follow him through the open passage.

Preparations for the boss fight

In the next area you will reach another Lakitu Info Centre. No new paper-toad rescue missions are required for the current progress, but you can replay already completed challenges as usual or take a look at the additional tasks available. Northwest of the building stand a changing crystal block and an ordinary one? Block with 50 coins. Open the normal Block and then go to the nearby Heart-Block in the northeast. Completely restore the CCP and BP of your entire group.

Before you continue north, it is worth a small detour east. Is there another one? Block with two super-nuts. Since we are immediately before a longer boss fight, you should definitely take these healing objects with you. They can heal multiple characters at the same time, making them especially helpful when Wiggler strikes multiple members of your group with the same attack.

Then check your equipment. Especially the previously found Koopa clothing, the silver statue and the loading gloves can be worthwhile, as long as their characteristics match your fighting style. Mario also owns the bomb derby since the encounter with Nabbit, which we can use well in the next fight. As much as possible, make sure that all three characters have enough BP and Paper Mario has fully built up his copies. After that, save your progress and follow the northern path.

Wiggler and Paper Kamek

In the next clearing, Wiggler is already in front of the last cardboard obstacles. But before he can finally clear the way to Mount Brrr, Paper Kamek appears. The wizard gets angry with Wiggler’s help and decides to use the forest dweller against Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario. With a powerful magic spell, he enrages Wiggler. His body turns red, his face changes and suddenly he storms furiously towards the three brothers. This begins a joint boss fight against Wiggler and Paper Kamek.

The fight differs significantly from the previous boss fights. Wiggler possesses a very high life energy and can attack twice per round due to his angry state. In addition, Paper Kamek regularly strengthens its power. As long as Wiggler is active, Paper Kamek cannot be targeted directly with ordinary attacks. You must therefore first disable Wiggler in order to be able to defeat the wizard himself. A good supply of BP is particularly important, because strong pair and trio attacks can significantly shorten the first phase.

Wiggler’s Shockwaves and Seeds

Among Wiggler’s most common attacks is a heavy ground strike, in which he drops his large body to the ground. This creates a circular shock wave that spreads over the entire combat field. Jump over it with the affected characters in time. Shortly thereafter follows a second shock wave, so you should not attack again immediately after the first jump. Wait until the second wave approaches and jump again. Especially with Mario and Luigi, you have to pay attention to the right rhythm so that they are back on the floor in time after the first jump.

Between the two shock waves, Wiggler also shoots individual seeds towards Mario or Luigi. Watch exactly which brother is targeted and jump over the floor. After the second shock wave, the following attack is often directed against Paper Mario. In this case, Wiggler hurls several seeds immediately one after the other. Use Paper Mario’s special hovering ability to stay in the air as long as possible. Hold Y down after the jump and let it glide back to the ground only when the last seed has flown by.

If you successfully avoid the two shock waves and the following seeds, you can survive the entire attack without damage. Especially at the beginning of the fight, it is worthwhile to observe the movements a little more closely instead of pressing the jump buttons immediately. Wiggler’s attack pattern remains basically the same, but is executed relatively quickly due to his angry state.

Wiggler’s Pursuit Attack

In another attack, Wiggler straightens his hind legs and starts running after one of the two brothers. Mario or Luigi then automatically escapes over a longer distance. During the pursuit, several smaller Enemies appear on the way, which you must fight back with the hammer. Watch the distance closely and press the appropriate button only when the Enemies is immediately in front of your character. A premature hammer strike can cause the attacker to get through unhindered and brake you.

At the end of the pursuit, Paper Kamek suddenly appears on his broom. Keep the hammer ready and strike the wizard at the right moment. If you succeed in the counterattack, Paper Kamek is thrown backwards and bounces directly against Wiggler. As a result, both Enemies suffer damage at the same time. This counterattack is especially worthwhile, otherwise Paper Kamek is difficult to hurt during the first combat phase.

If you miss Paper Kamek, however, Wiggler often catches up with the fleeing brother and causes considerable damage with his subsequent body attack. Therefore, try not to perform the last hammer movement too early. Orient yourself to Paper Kamek’s actual position and wait until he is close enough to the chosen character.

Paper Mario as Boomerang

Another special attack begins with Wiggler balancing on a huge stone ball. Then he rolls towards the group. Paper Mario turns into a boomerang in this sequence, while Mario and Luigi stand ready to take turns throwing him. On the touch screen, a target cursor appears, with which you can determine the trajectory.

Point the cursor as closely as possible at the approaching ball and throw Paper Mario at the right moment. As soon as he returns, the other brother must catch him or throw him again. Repeat this process and hit the ball as often as possible. After about seven to eight successful hits, she shatters and Wiggler loses his balance. This interrupts his attack before he can roll over the group.

During this sequence, Paper Kamek can also fly past you. With a particularly well-targeted throw, you can also hit it and cause additional damage. First, however, focus on destroying the bullet reliably. If you fail several throws in a row, Wiggler reaches the group and rolls over the affected characters. This causes considerable damage and can unnecessarily prolong the fight.

Paper Kamek’s Magic Bullets Retaliate

In between, Paper Kamek himself floats into the foreground and attacks with several magic bullets. Its spells have three different forms: circle, triangle and square. At the beginning of the attack sequence, he sends the symbols relatively slowly to the individual characters. Observe exactly which symbol is aimed at Mario, Luigi or Paper Mario, because within the same attack series this assignment remains the same.

Strike the approaching bullets back with the hammer as soon as they are immediately in front of the respective character. After the first slow projectiles, Paper Kamek increases the pace. If you have remembered the assignment of the three symbols, you can counter the following attack chain much easier. However, it is important that Paper Kamek can change the assignment on the next use of this attack. Therefore, do not rely on the fact that, for example, the triangle always meets the same brother.

If you succeed in repulsing all bullets successfully, they will bounce against Wiggler. The large forest dweller is thereby himself hit and in return clashes with Paper Kamek. In this way, you can damage both opponents again without using your own attack move.

Wiggler with Bros. Defeating Attacks

During your own attack rounds, you should first focus completely on Wiggler. He has significantly more HP than Paper Kamek and holds even strong hits well. Particularly effective is the bomb derby just received. If you strike back all twelve bombs with Mario, the attack does significant damage. Luigi’s Fire Flower is also well suited to weaken Wiggler quickly. The attacks also cause fire damage and can therefore also be useful against other Enemies in the Forest later.

During combat, additional paper spearheads occasionally appear, supporting Wiggler. Try not to let them live too long. Especially attacks that capture multiple targets are suitable for damaging the small Enemies together with Wiggler. When the spear bearers attack, watch their weapons closely and use a matching hammer counter. Ordinary jumps can be dangerous against their spears as long as they keep the weapons up.

Since Wiggler is regularly enraged by Paper Kamek’s magic, his high power is a constant danger for a long time. Therefore, keep your HP as safe as possible and renew paper Mario’s copies as soon as several of them have been lost. If necessary, use super nuts or other healing items that restore multiple characters at the same time. A matching combat card can also help you survive a particularly dangerous section or the damage to your next Bros. Increase the attack.

Paper Kamek finally off

Once Wiggler’s life energy is completely depleted, he collapses exhausted and remains on the ground unfit for a few laps. Only now does Paper Kamek itself come to the fore and can be attacked directly. This phase is crucial for the entire boss fight. Wiggler has not yet been finally defeated. If you let Paper Kamek live too long, he uses his magic and revives Wiggler. Then you have to reduce his entire life energy again before you can attack the wizard again.

Therefore, focus all strong attacks immediately on Paper Kamek. Since he is floating on his broom, attacks are especially helpful, which can also reliably hit flying Enemies. Luigis Drill Shell is a good choice for this. Similarly, you can cause significant damage with Mario’s bomb derby, as long as you master the keys safely. The Fire Flower is also effective against the paper form of the wizard. If you have a combat card that increases your power, you should use it at the beginning of this phase and then immediately with a strong Bros. Repeat the attack.

You have to defeat Paper Kamek before he can completely heal his partner. If he succeeds in reviving, the fight is not yet lost. All you have to do is attack Wiggler again and disable him once again. Since you now know the most important attack patterns, you can tackle the second round a little more targeted. However, pay attention to your BP stock and use a syrup glass in time if necessary so that you do not miss strong attacks at the decisive moment.

After enough hits, Paper Kamek is finally defeated. The wizard loses control of his spell and retreats furiously. Wiggler awakens again from his trance and realizes what has happened. As a reward for the fight, Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario will receive Experience Point, coins and a pair of power gloves for Paper Mario.

Wiggler becomes Flutter

After Paper Kamek’s defeat, Wiggler’s peaceful nature returns. However, the large forest dweller is completely exhausted from the many efforts. He thanks Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario for their help and explains that he has to rest first. Shortly after, he closes his eyes and remains motionless. The three heroes initially believe that Wiggler did not survive his last fight. In an unusually sad scene, they say goodbye to their new friend as a ray of light descends from the sky.

A little later, however, the sad mood suddenly dissolves. Wiggler has turned into a large winged butterfly named Flutter. He had by no means died, but merely completed his natural transformation. With his new wings, he can now move freely over the forest and even cover longer distances through the air. As a thank you for the help of the three brothers, he offers to take them directly to Mount Brrr.

Take his offer. Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario climb on Flatter’s back and are carried high above the treetops. During the flight you can take a first look at the snowy Mount Brrr, whose steep slopes and icy caves await us next. Flutter then takes the group to a safe place in the lower mountain area and promises to be available for later return flights.

Arrival at Mount Brrr

After landing on Mount Brrr, you immediately realize that the landscape has changed significantly. Instead of dense forests, snow, ice and steep rock faces await you. There are several icy paths on the floor, over which Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario can slide uncontrollably. In addition, you will already find a Heart-Block at the entrance, which restores your HP and BP. Use it and then investigate the environment. Flutter waits nearby and can take you back to the Gloomy Woods if necessary, so that the connection between the two areas remains permanently open.

This concludes the first major visit to Gloomy Woods. You now own all 11 berries or have handed them over to Wiggler, won Yoshi’s melon, turned off the two electric gates and retrieved Mario’s bomb derby. In addition, the previously accessible equipment and hidden blocks were collected, while Paper Kamek’s defeat finally cleared the way to Mount Brrr.

However, some areas of the twilight forest remain inaccessible. Especially the western, darker part of the forest as well as several high cardboard platforms can only be fully explored with later trio capabilities. We therefore return again in the further course of the game and then also close the other collection points.

The adventure continues on Mount Brrr. There we must climb the snowy mountain, overcome new Enemies and icy puzzles and finally find a way to Bowser’s villa where Princess Peach and Paper Peach are held captive.
