World scores, character coins and story progress unlock different rewards in Yoshi’s Island DS. A perfect stage score comes from thirty stars, twenty red coins and five flowers. Character coins do not add to that hundred-point total.
Babies and return visits
Baby Mario is available from the start. He can dash, activate M Blocks and use Super Stars. Baby Peach joins in 1-5, allowing longer Flutter Jumps through wind. Return to 1-2 and 1-3 afterward for her character coins.
Baby DK joins in 2-1 and climbs vines, swings from ropes and breaks obstacles with his dash and explosive eggs. Return to 1-7 for his coin. Peach is absent during the first 2-1 attempt, so collect her coin there after rescuing her at the end.
Baby Wario first appears in 3-5. His magnet moves metal crates and lifts, and attracts coins. The first visit is restricted to Wario, so DK’s 3-5 coin needs another run. Wario leaves after 3-8 and returns for the final castle. Baby Bowser first appears in 4-5 and melts ice with fire. Yoshi cannot swallow enemies to make eggs while carrying him, but can pick up and throw existing eggs. Revisit 4-5 with Peach for her coin. Bowser also leaves before the last world and returns in 5-8.
Secret stages, Extra stages and world stars
Finish the main adventure to unlock the five Secret stages and Time Trial mode. Earn eight hundred points in a world for its Extra stage. Perfect scores on the eight main courses are a straightforward way to reach that total; a Secret-stage score can contribute after the story. Character coins are not required for the Extra unlock.
One hundred points on all ten courses of a world gives a thousand-point world total and its title-screen star. Complete that scoring challenge separately from the character-coin collection.
Character coins and harder minigames
There are thirty-nine character coins: eight in each of Worlds 1–4 and seven in World 5. Course 5-8 has none. The coins depict Mario, Peach or DK and can be collected only while carrying the matching baby. Wario and Bowser character coins are not used in the finished game.
Collect a world’s full set to unlock the hard version of its minigame. The regular minigames are opened by finding their keyed huts during the adventure. The five games are Egg Toss, Flutter Challenge, Bouncy Maze, Speed Eating and Egg Disposal.
Bonus games and Time Trial
At seven hundred world points, that world’s Bonus game becomes available for repeated play on the map. Landing on a flower in the goal roulette can also open a Bonus Challenge. Time Trial is available from a cleared save after the final boss; it measures course performance by time and is separate from the Secret-stage unlock.
