Big Lantern Ghost and General Guy

Paper Mario guide hub

After finding the frying pan, wallet and other stolen items in the first part of Shy Guy’s Toy Box, we can now look at the remaining areas. Our path leads from the pink over the green to the red station. They find more Star Pieces, get a new partner with Watt and finally meet the leader of the entire Shy Guy gang: Guy General.

Return the stolen things

Before we get on in the toy box, some of the stolen items have to go back to Toad Town. So leave the toy box first and bring Omle T. back her frying pan. As a thank you she bakes a cake. Don’t eat it yourself, because we need that cake right now. Then go to the Toad Town Post Office and return the stolen wallet. As a reward, you get a Star Piece. If you’ve ever been on the road, you can also walk through Toad Town and watch the Shy Guys continue to cause plenty of chaos.

Afterwards return to the toy box, drive to the pink station and from there continue to the left. Eventually, you’ll encounter the giant Gourmet Guy who blocks the path. Ordinary foods don’t interest him – give him Omle T’s cake. Gourmet Guy is so enthusiastic about it that he jumps wildly through the area and finally disappears. He dropped the cookbook. If you bring this later to Omle T., she can combine two ingredients in the future and thus prepare much more recipes.

The path behind Gourmet Guy is now free. Follow it up and then to the right through the next toy areas. Defeat the Shy Guys along the way and activate the big lever at the end. This repairs another piece of the railway line. Now return to the pink station, change the switch and talk to the driver. From now on, the train can take you to the green station.

Green Train Station – Secret Note and Dictionary

Get off at the green station and first examine the ground directly in front of the station. With the vortex jump you can open a hidden floor plate here and collect another Star Pieces. In addition to the station, you also notice four different colored blocks. We do not yet know in which order they have to be activated, so we go to the right first.

In the following section, conveyor belts move through several fences. At one point Mario does not seem to get any further. Activate Bow and use her ability to make Mario invisible. While Mario is invisible, the Conveyor Belt can simply transport him through the fence. On the other hand, you will find a yellow Shy Guy with the stolen secret note. Defeat him and take him. Further to the right is also a one-armed bandit, where you can try a small game of chance on request.

Follow the path through the moving platforms. Below the last larger platform is another Star Pieces surrounded by some coins. Let yourself fall carefully down, collect it and then work your way back up. At the end of the section is a treasure chest with the stolen dictionary of Russ T. Depending on the answer you gave during Princess Peach’s previous cutscene, the chest can be guarded by an enemy or you can simply find an item in front of it instead.

Leave the toy box and bring the dictionary to Russ T. in Toad Town. For the return you get another Star Pieces. Then give him the secret note. Thanks to his dictionary, Russ T. can decipher the message. The solution is: Yellow → Green → Red → Blue. Return to the green station and strike the four colored blocks in exactly this order. If you have done everything right, the blocks disappear and another piece of the railway line appears. This clears the way to the last station of the toy box: the red station.

Red Station – Jack Laterna and Watt

Take the train to the red station. Here is a Save Block and a heart block, so save your progress and heal Mario completely. Also examines the ground in front of the station again: here, too, a Star Piece hides under a loose floor plate. Our first destination is to the left of the station.

Follow the platforms to the left. In this area, there is also a Super-Block, with which you can improve a partner to the next rank. If you want to bring Watt directly to the super rank later, you should leave this block for the time being and return after the coming fight. In addition, in this section, the Badges Focus Plus is in a hidden block – look closely at suspicious gaps between the normal blocks.

On the far left, you finally reach a completely dark room. This is where the intermediary Jack Laterna is waiting. The ghost boss has 40 HP, 5 attack and no defense. At the beginning, however, you can not attack Jack at all, as he hides completely in the darkness. So focus your attacks on his lantern first. Each hit makes them shine brighter and makes the spirit visible piece by piece. Once there is enough light in the room, you can dial Jack directly and harm him. However, he can blow out the lantern again and darken the room again, so you have to repeat the game. His strongest direct attack causes 5 damage; in addition, the lantern can use a light attack that hits Mario and his partner.

Name Max. HP Attack Defense
Jack Laterna 40 5 0

If you defeated Jack, he leaves his lantern behind. Destroy her and you discover in her Watt, who was held captive by the spirit. Watt joins Mario as a new partner and is extremely useful both outside and within combat. In dark rooms, she provides light and makes invisible blocks visible. In combat, their electric shock also ignores the enemy’s defense, which makes Watt very valuable against heavily armored enemies. On the way back, go to the super block once again and lift Watt directly to the super rank. This later gives her, among other things, the opportunity to temporarily increase Mario’s attack power.

On the way to Guy General

Return to the red station, heal yourself again if necessary and this time move to the right. A Shy Guy discovers Mario and disappears behind a large toy wall. Use bombshells in the damaged area to blow up the wall and follow the escaping Shy Guys. In the next area you can use Watt to make hidden blocks visible. With a little skill, you also get the strong Item Shooting Star, which can later inflict heavy damage on all opponents at the same time.

Keep following the Shy Guys into the next dark room and let Watt illuminate the surroundings. As soon as the lights come on, the Shy Guys panic, tear down another wall and flee. Run after them. Behind it is the large toy arena and thus the headquarters of the gang. Now the final opponent of Chapter 4 is waiting.

Boss Fight: Guy General

The fight against Guy General consists not only of the general himself, but of several successive waves of attack by his army. First, a complete Shy Guy squad storms towards Mario. It has a total of 15 CP; the more members it eliminates, the weaker its joint attack. Surface attacks and strong jumps are particularly effective here. Afterwards, Guy General sends two stilt-shy guys with 7 HP each into battle. This is followed by two superimposed shy-guy groups of 10 HP each. Watt is an excellent choice for all phases, as their electric attack ignores enemy defense.

Only after his troops are defeated, Guy General personally attacks with his toy tank. The tank has 30 HP, 4 attack and 2 defense. Behind the General is also a large Lightbulb with 8 HP and 1 Defense. If possible, take care of this Lightbulb first, because as long as it is intact, Guy General can use a strong electric attack that hits Mario and his partner. Watt is immune to this current attack and at the same time ideal for attacking both the bulb and the armored general.

When the Lightbulb is destroyed, Guy General loses his most dangerous attack and mainly drops bombs on Mario. Its high defense makes normal weak attacks less effective, so Watts electric shock, strong hammer and jump orders, and star forces are especially helpful. If you have already placed Watt in the Super Rank, you can also use her ability to increase Mario’s attack power. Heal yourselves in time when your CCP is running out, and then concentrate all attacks on the General. After 30 HP, the fight is decided and the entire Shy Guy army takes flight.

Opponents Max. HP Attack Defense
Shy Guy troops 15 Up to 15* 0
Stelt-Shy Guy 7 4 0
Shy-guy pile 10 Up to 4* 0
Guy General 30 4 2
Lightbulb 8 5 1

*The attack strength of the Shy Guy squad or stack decreases as soon as you take out individual members.

After the victory, you can finally free the fourth High Star muscular. This concludes Chapter 4 and the chaos in Toad Town has an end for the time being. As usual, a cutscene with Princess Peach follows before Mario learns where his journey leads him next.
