After crossing with the whale, Mario finally reaches Lavalava Island. Of course, Kolorado is immediately on treasure hunt and storms ahead, while we look around a little more thoroughly. Chapter 5 takes you first through the Yoshi village and then deep into the Jade Jungle. There, Sushie joins your team to find the five missing Yoshi children and finally track down the mysterious Don Raphael. Only with his help can the way to Mt. Open Lavalava.
Prologue: Welcome to Rogueport on Lavalava Island
After the whale has dropped you off on the beach, you can first collect some useful items. Hit the palm trees to get a coconut and examine the bushes in the area at the whale. Behind one of them is a stopwatch. The small heart plants fill up your CPs, while the large rotating flowers can throw you into the air. Jump on such a flower and press the Z button to catapult you upwards. Also a first Star Pieces is already hiding on Lavalava Island: hit against the outermost destructible tree on the beach and collect it.
Follow the path to the right. Of course, Kolorado is already in trouble and is beset by several opponents. Free him and continue on your way. On the next stretch of beach lies a letter to Igor on a large rock, which you can send with Parakarry later in the shop of the Boo Villa. For the delivery you get a Star Piece, so be sure to take the letter with you. Follow the path further east and you reach Yoshi’s Village. Talk to the residents, stop by the Toad House and also talk to the village chief before continuing into the jungle on the right side of the village.
Kolorado, of course, runs ahead again and is attacked shortly after by Speer-Shy-Guys. Save him one more time and follow the path to Mt. Lavalava. The volcano is already within reach, but a wide lava flow separates you from the entrance. Without help, you will not get anywhere. Return to Yoshi Village. There is now complete chaos: the five young Yoshi, who call themselves the Terrible Five, have secretly disappeared into the Jade Jungle and have not returned. Before the chief deals with your volcano problem, you must first find all five children.
Sushie joins the team
Leave the main part of the village to the west, open the gate from two bushes and then go to the area to the right. There you hear cries for help from a tree. Hit the hammer several times and Sushie falls down. The Yoshi children’s caregiver had followed them into the jungle and ended up in the tree herself. She now joins Mario as a new partner. Outside of fights, you can swim on Sushie’s back over water. During the swim, pushes down, it can also dive under low bridges. In combat, she has strong water attacks, which are at the latest in Mt. Lavalava is especially valuable.
Use your new ability for a small round of collecting. In the entrance area of the jungle you can swim to an isolated island in the middle. Defeat the opponent there and open the red order block to receive the strong Badges super quake. He allows Mario to hit all opponents on the ground or on the Blanket at the same time with a strong shock. In the area where you found Sushie, you also reach the northeastern island. There is a Star Piece there, and if you hit the tree, a letter to Russ T. falls down. If you deliver it later in Toad Town, you get another Star Pieces. Another super block is reached when you swim from the jungle entrance with Sushie to the left and land on the middle island. If you want, you can immediately upgrade Sushie to the super rank here – for Chapter 5 this is a very good investment.
Finding the five missing Yoshi
The five Yoshi children can basically be saved in any order. With Sushie, all required areas of the jungle can now be reached. For the red Yoshi, swim west from the jungle entrance and dive under the bridge. Go ashore on the western island, open the bush passages and take care of the enemy disguised as bush. Behind the last bushes you will find the first Yoshi. He walks back to the village independently after the conversation.
For the green Yoshi you go from the entrance area to the west and then to the north. Swim to the partially raised island and use the large helicopter flower to get to the upper level. Opens the bush passages and goes down through the exposed warp pipe. In the underground world it is pitch dark, so you need watts. Let them light up the room and you discover the second Yoshi. The violet Yoshi is again closer to the original jungle entrance. Work from the west over the northern area again to the east and hit there against the big tree stump so that it tips over and forms a bridge. Then swim to the platform in the south and hit the tree. The Yoshi falls down and also makes his way home.
For the yellow Yoshi, you follow from the western jungle section north and then twice east. There, the Yoshi child is beset by two dangerous piranha plants. Defeat both opponents and then talk to the child. The last, blue Yoshi, hides in the northwestern section. Goes west from the entrance, then north and west again. Strike against the tree stump to make a transition and follow the path to the Yoshi. In this area you should also definitely get into the water: Under the water surface is another Star Pieces.
Once you have found all five children, return to Yoshi village and talk to the families and then the chief. As a thank you, he gives you the important key object Jade-Rabe. At the same time, he tells you about Don Raphael, the mysterious guardian of the jungle. The Jade rabbit fits into a large raven statue deep in the jungle and opens the way to him.
The Secret Way to Don Raphael
Go back to the Jade Jungle and the great stone raven. Put the jade rabbit in the recess of the statue. Then a previously hidden path opens behind the plant. From now on you have to expose the exits in several seemingly closed jungle rooms yourself. In the first section you examine the bushes in the northeast corner. Behind this lies the next path. In the second room are several displaceable blue cubes and water fountains. Push the blocks onto the openings so that the water pressure blows the large stone out of the way. Then you have to close or redirect one of the water jets again so that Mario can pass himself.
In the following section, again, there appears to be no exit. Examine the bushes on the upper right side and additionally pull on the hanging tendrils. One of them opens the hidden path. After that, a larger opponent group of several piranha plants and a Magikoopa awaits you. Remove all opponents and move on to the right. In this deeper part of the jungle, also pay attention to the ground: in front of the big tree of Don Raphael is another hidden plate with a Star Piece. The spy badges are again very helpful here.
At the end of the path you reach a huge tree. Go in, record your progress, and follow the paths and openings in the trunk ever higher. In between, you get to the outdoors several times and then back into the tree. At the very top, you finally meet Don Raphael, a giant raven and the legendary guardian of the Jade jungle. He already knows why Mario has come and makes his way to Mt. Lavalava. Follow him back through the jungle. Don Raphael waits for Mario in every section, so you can not get lost.
The Ultra Stone and the Road to the Volcano
Back at the lava flow before Mt. Lavalava calls Don Raphael his ravens together. While Kolorado watches impatiently, they build a large rope pull construction and a rope slide across the lava. You can finally reach the entrance of the volcano. Before Don Raphael says goodbye, he also hands Mario the Ultra Stone. This important item unlocks the second partner upgrade: Partners who have already reached the super rank can now be upgraded to the ultra rank on a super block. This gives them higher attack values and their respective strongest special ability.
For the coming Mt. Lavalava is Sushie a particularly good choice for the first Ultra upgrade. Their water attacks are extremely effective against many fire opponents and also a great help in the later boss fight. You don’t have to use the Ultra Stone anywhere – once Don Raphael has given it to you, the existing super blocks can be used automatically for the second upgrade.
Heal yourself from the volcano again in the Yoshi village, sort your items and save them. Then you return to the new construction. Get into the basket, get pulled up and then use the rope slide over the lava flow. Of course, Kolorado has already rushed ahead.
This begins the next major section of Chapter 5: Mt. Lavalava
