Flower Fields

Paper Mario guide hub

After planting all four magic seeds in Toad Town, the mysterious flower gate opens and Mario reaches the Flower Fields. However, little of the otherwise colorful landscape is currently to be seen: Schnaufula and its cloud troops have completely darkened the sky and slowly dry the plants. The big tree in the center tells you what to do. To reach Schnaufula’s hideout above the clouds, you need a magic bean, loose earth and magic water. These are the three things that we will now gradually get.

The Magic Bean of Petunia

Stores at the central area and first take the middle path to the right. Along the way to Petunia, you’ll encounter a few new enemies, including Cloud Dumplings and other Flower Fields residents. Quietly examine the bushes on the walls with the hammer, because several of them will give you stinkroot. The trees are also interesting: three are next to each other in this area. Hit first against the middle tree, then against the right and last against the left. If you have followed the order correctly, the Badges Happy Flower falls off. With badges laid out, there is a chance during a fight that Mario will automatically get a BP back after a round.

Follow the path to Petunia. The passionate collector owns exactly the magic bean Mario needs, but is besieged by several moles that damage her plants. Talk to Petunia and then do all the moles in the area. They attack partly in small groups, but should not be a big problem at this time. Once you have eliminated them all, return to Petunia. The magician will give you thanks. Directly to the left of Petunia is also a tree with red berries. Beat against it several times and best take at least two of them with you. The berries restore HP, but we need one as a key for another section of the Flower Fields.

Before you go back, examine the open grass area to the left of Petunia with a spinal jump. Underneath a hidden floor plate lies a Star Piece. An area further to the right of Petunia you will also find an abandoned well. You can’t throw anything meaningful into it yet, but remember the place – as soon as you own an azure berry, we’ll come back here.

Posie and the Loose Earth

Return to the central tree and take the lower left path this time. A red flower blocks the gate and only lets pass visitors who bring her a red berry. Give her one of the berries of Petunia’s tree and the path opens. Defeat the opponents behind and examine the bushes along the walls. Under one of them you will find a stinkroot again. Further back is a tree with yellow berries. Hit it and take at least one, better two berries with you. In front of the tree is also a hidden floor plate with another Star Pieces.

Follow the path to the beautiful crystal tree. Here lives Posie, whose roots are connected to the tree. Talk to her and tell her about your plans. Posie helps you without much in return and gives Mario the loose earth he is looking for. So you already have two of the three ingredients for the magic bean. You should also remember the crystal tree, because Posie can later get another extremely important item for you.

Then return to the center. Before we take the next main path, you can use the yellow berry directly. Go to the lower right exit and talk to the yellow flower in front of the gate. Give her a yellow berry and she lets Mario pass.

Lilly and the Missing Waterstone

Behind the yellow gate awaits you a longer section with thorn fields and narrow platforms. Use parakarry to cross the larger gaps, and be careful not to fall into the thorns. On the other hand, you reach a tree with azure berries. Strike against it several times and take at least two berries: one we need for a secret badge and another to open a blue flower gate later. The azure berries also regenerate 5 BP and are therefore also useful as normal healing products.

In this part of the Flower Fields you can find two more Star Pieces. Near the azure berry tree, one hides among the tall flowers, another lies under a hidden floor slab in the following section. Search the floor with the whirl jump or use the spy badges if you have created it. You can also reach another super block via a sideway. If you have not yet brought an important partner to the ultra rank, you can make up for this here.

Continue on the main path and you finally reach a completely dried pond. There sits Lilly, an aquatic plant that is slowly running out of strength. The magic waterstone, which normally provides the pond with continuous water, was stolen by Schnaufula’s helpers and subsequently lost. Lilly asks Mario to bring him back. Also hit the tree in the upper area. There you can get an extremely rare Jammin‘ Jelly that restores a whopping 50 BP – save this precious item for a later boss fight.

Before we look for Lilly’s waterstone, it is worth a short detour. Return to Petunia and from there walk one area to the right to the abandoned well. Throw in one of your azure berries. The mysterious inhabitant of the fountain is thrilled and throws you the Badges Flower Saver in return. This very strong badge reduces the BP cost of all corresponding Mario and partner attacks by one point. Although it requires several order points, it is extremely useful in a fighting style focused on special attacks.

In Search of the Water Stone

Return to the big tree in the center and now take the middle path to the left. In front of the passage is a blue flower. Give your second azure and it opens the gate. Behind you will meet more often on Stachis for the first time. Their high defense makes normal attacks less effective, Watt is especially convenient here because their electric shock ignores the defense. In the first area you can also use a hidden watt? Make the block visible. Then use the jump field to get to this block and on to the brick block. Jump up there again and you discover another hidden block with a shooting star.

In the next section you reach a large hedge maze. Before you can go inside, two Lakitus appear, who are also looking for the lost waterstone. In battle, they summon Stachis and throw Spiny eggs at Mario. If possible, focus your attacks on the Lakitus first, because as long as they live, they can always make new Stachis appear. Starstorm is well suited to eliminate the existing Stachis at the same time, while Watt is particularly effective against their defense.

After the fight you can explore the maze. Many hedges have invisible passageways – if a path seems to end, just try to walk through the wall. Your goal is the warp pipe in the middle of the maze. Go through it and then follow the path to the left. If you want to examine every angle, you will also find a repeatedly usable coin block in the maze.

At the end of the path you will finally meet Rosie. She actually owns the wanted waterstone, but does not even think about returning it to Lilly. Rosie considers himself the most beautiful flower of the entire Flower Fields and would rather keep the sparkling stone himself. After some persuasion, she finally offers Mario an exchange: If you find something even more beautiful than the waterstone, the stone is yours.

Fortunately, we already know someone directly connected to a tree full of sparkling crystals. Our next path, therefore, leads back to Posie. From her we can get the crystal berry and exchange Rosie’s waterstone. Then we can help Lilly – and on the way, Mario’s last shoe upgrade, a new partner and finally Schnaufula himself.
