Cool, Cool Mountain

Super Mario 64 DS guide hub

Course 4 — Cool, Cool Mountain. The snow painting is behind a three-star door. Keep Yoshi available for frozen coins, Mario for wall kicks and Wario for the frozen-pond switch star. This chapter covers the seven named DS missions and the separate 100-Coin Star.

Stars in this course

  1. Slip Slidin’ Away
  2. Li’l Penguin Lost
  3. Big Penguin Race
  4. Frosty Slide for 8 Red Coins
  5. Snowman’s Lost His Head
  6. Mario’s Super Wall Kick
  7. Switch Star of Cool, Cool Mountain
  8. 100-Coin Star

Mission 1 — Slip Slidin’ Away

Enter the cabin through its chimney beside the starting point. Steer down the snow slide, easing off the inside edge before each sharp bend. Near the left turn, the coin trail entering the wall marks the optional tunnel shortcut.

Either route reaches the bottom cabin. Leave through its door to receive the star outside. The shortcut is valid for this first mission, but not for the later penguin race. On the final narrow icy section, straighten your movement before accelerating so you do not slide off while the exit is already in view.

Mission 2 — Li’l Penguin Lost

Use Mario or a red cap. Pick up the small penguin on the ledge near the starting cabin and carry it down the mountain to its mother at the bottom. Walk carefully across the narrow bridges and put the penguin down beside her.

The small penguin already near the mother is a different bird and does not satisfy this delivery. Keep hold of the one from the upper ledge; if you drop it on the way, retrieve it before continuing. Speak to the mother after bringing the correct baby to collect the star.

Mission 3 — Big Penguin Race

Enter the chimney and speak to the large penguin on the slide. Race down the normal course and cross the finish first. The wall tunnel used in the first mission is a shortcut and invalidates this race.

Stay close to the inside of broad curves without cutting across open gaps. Save small steering corrections for the narrow final ice bridge instead of arriving sideways at full speed. Once you win fairly, speak to the penguin at the bottom for the star. Losing the lead briefly is safer than taking a desperate turn off the course.

Mission 4 — Frosty Slide for 8 Red Coins

Bring Yoshi: two of the Red Coins are frozen in ice. Use fire from the upper campfire to melt the coin near the baby penguin’s ledge, then use fire again for the icy coin on the lower platform beneath the broken starting bridge.

Find the remaining coins by the snowman’s head and Bob-omb Buddy, to the right of the bridge with jumping snowmen, just beyond that broken-bridge route, on the tree left of the bottom cabin, by the wooden bridges to the cabin’s right, and at the far end beyond them. Follow the map markers for their heights. Collect all eight and take the star without carrying a cap that removes Yoshi’s fire ability.

Mission 5 — Snowman’s Lost His Head

Speak to the snowball near the beginning to start its descent. Slide ahead of it down the mountain and lead it toward the separate snowman’s head. Do not simply jump straight to the bottom and wait far from its route.

When you reach the head, stand beyond it so the rolling body follows you into the correct position. Let the snowball join the head instead of blocking it with your own character. Speak to the completed snowman for the star. If the body rolls past, restart the mission and keep the final approach closer to the head.

Mission 6 — Mario’s Super Wall Kick

Use Mario for the required wall kicks. Speak to the Bob-omb Buddy on the small platform reached by the moving lift, then enter the cannon and aim for the distant tree across the gap. Catch the tree and descend onto the path.

Follow the ledge to the high walls. Use successive wall kicks to climb the narrow gap and reach the star above. Set up each jump close enough to the wall for Mario to push away; a plain jump from the floor will not reach the upper ledge. Yoshi’s flutter and Wario’s weight do not replace Mario’s wall-kick route.

Mission 7 — Switch Star of Cool, Cool Mountain

Bring Wario to the frozen pond beside the mother penguin and ground-pound it to break the ice. Do this before starting the timed run. The star’s sphere is below that opening.

Ride the wooden lift and step onto the Star Switch at the intermediate platform. Hurry down to the pond and drop through the hole to reach the star. The important preparation is the broken ice: waiting until the timer starts to work out how to enter the pond wastes the available time. Repeat the switch if you need another attempt.

100-Coin Star

Use the cabin slide for a large opening supply of coins, then exit without taking the ordinary mission star. Continue collecting the outdoor Red Coins and enemy coins. Search the lower paths and the Blue Coin Switch beyond the broken bridge for the rest.

Avoid making the hundredth coin one that is difficult to revisit on the slide. If your counter is near one hundred during the descent, slow down and be ready to collect the resulting star immediately. If you leave the slide area without that star, do not assume it will remain waiting outside.
