Snowman’s Land

Super Mario 64 DS guide hub

Course 10 — Snowman’s Land. After Bowser in the Fire Sea, go upstairs to the mirror room. The reflection reveals a painting missing from the real wall; jump into that unmarked wall. This chapter covers the seven named DS missions and the separate 100-Coin Star.

Stars in this course

  1. Snowman’s Big Head
  2. Chill with the Bully
  3. Yoshi’s Ice Sculpture
  4. Whirl from the Freezing Pond
  5. Snowman’s Silver Star
  6. Into the Igloo
  7. Red Coins in the House
  8. 100-Coin Star

Mission 1 — Snowman’s Big Head

Climb past the ice waves and follow the path up the large snowman. At the narrow bridge near his face, walk on the side of the penguin opposite the snowman so its body blocks the breath that would blow you away.

Move at the penguin’s pace instead of overtaking it into the wind. After crossing, climb or backflip to the summit star. If the snowman blows off your cap, retrieve it before continuing: losing protection makes later hazards less forgiving.

Mission 2 — Chill with the Bully

Reach the icy platform with the Chill Bully. Keep yourself near the middle and knock him back toward the edge with jumping attacks. Give yourself room to land rather than trading hits at the rim.

Push him off the platform to reveal the star. The surrounding freezing water is dangerous, so recover your position after each exchange. Metal form can make the encounter easier when available, but the basic requirement is to win the pushing contest without falling off first.

Mission 3 — Yoshi’s Ice Sculpture

Enter as Yoshi and find the frozen star in the ice structure near the beginning. Activate the ? Blocks first, then take a Power Flower to give Yoshi fire breath.

Melt the ice obstructing the star and collect it. This DS mission replaces the older block-maze puzzle; ordinary punches and Mario’s balloon transformation will not melt the ice. Stay as Yoshi rather than putting on a borrowed cap immediately before using the flower.

Mission 4 — Whirl from the Freezing Pond

Find a Spindrift beside the freezing pond and jump onto it to gain a spinning lift. Steer across the water to the far ledge with two yellow blocks.

Break the blocks: one supplies the star and the other a Koopa Shell for crossing the freezing surface. Line up the landing before leaving the Spindrift, because falling short puts you in the dangerous pond. The shell can help with later course objectives, but taking it alone does not finish this mission.

Mission 5 — Snowman’s Silver Star

Select this mission to display five Silver Stars on the map. Use the Koopa Shell for the widely spaced ground-level route and collect each marked star, checking above or below a ledge when the marker seems close but nothing is in sight.

Avoid colliding with the snow enemies while carrying several Silver Stars. Recover any that scatter before continuing. Once all five are held, go to the Star Sphere and collect the Power Star. The lower-screen map is the reliable way to distinguish a missing collectible from an ordinary coin on the snow.

Mission 6 — Into the Igloo

Use Luigi and ride the shell up the snowy approach to the igloo. Crawl through its small opening, then find the Power Flower inside.

Become invisible and pass through the floor grating near the entrance to reach the enclosed star. The ordinary solid route does not open that barrier, so refresh the flower if the effect runs out before you descend. Keep the camera low enough to judge the crawl entrance and avoid losing the shell against the nearby wall before reaching it.

Mission 7 — Red Coins in the House

Enter the igloo and collect its eight Red Coins. All eight for this mission are inside; they are not the outdoor N64 shell-route set. Use the Bob-omb Buddy’s markers and follow the gaps between the ice walls.

Luigi’s Power Flower lets you pass through obstructing grates where needed. Collect the complete set and go to the star marker. If a marker appears directly across a wall, look for a passage or refresh invisibility instead of trying to jump repeatedly into the ice.

100-Coin Star

Sweep the outdoor coins and defeat Spindrifts for three coins apiece. Circle the snowmen to release their coin rewards, and chase the Coin Coffer carefully for its supply. The shell helps cross the freezing terrain without stopping on the water.

Enter the igloo for its Red Coins and remaining indoor supply. Luigi is useful for its jumps and grates. Finish the count in a place where you can also collect the star; do not let the last coin lure you into freezing water with an almost empty Power Meter.
