Bob-omb Battlefield

Super Mario 64 DS guide hub

Course 1 — Bob-omb Battlefield. Enter the Bob-omb painting in the ground-floor room without a star requirement. Start with Yoshi and borrow Mario’s red cap for the race before his permanent rescue. This chapter covers the seven named DS missions and the separate 100-Coin Star.

Mission 1 — Big Bob-omb on the Summit

Start as Yoshi. Cross the two bridges, pass Chain Chomp at a distance and follow the climbing path around the mountain. Dodge the rolling iron balls and keep moving through the steep section. At the summit, speak to Big Bob-omb to begin.

Stay out of his reach and face the small Bob-ombs he throws. Catch one with Yoshi’s tongue, then spit it back at him before it explodes. Repeat for three hits. This first DS battle uses Yoshi’s tongue; trying the later grab-and-throw tactic here misses the intended solution.

Mission 2 — Footrace with Koopa the Quick

Use Mario, or put on one of the red caps marked by the Bob-omb Buddy near the start. Speak to Koopa the Quick while wearing it, then run over the bridges and take the mountain path to the summit flag.

Keep the cap and use the ordinary climbing route, avoiding cannons and teleport shortcuts for a straightforward valid race. Steer around the rolling balls rather than stopping directly in their path. Touch the flag and wait for Koopa to arrive; speak to him for the star. You can attempt this with a borrowed cap before permanently rescuing Mario.

Mission 3 — 5 Silver Stars!

Select this mission so the five Silver Stars appear on the lower-screen map. Use the map to plan a sweep of the field instead of repeatedly climbing the mountain. Follow each marker, checking its height and any nearby Goomba carrying the collectible.

After collecting all five, return to the Star Sphere near the beginning. Take care around Chain Chomp and the rolling balls on the way back: a hit can scatter collected Silver Stars, so recover a dropped one before leaving its area. The Power Star is the sphere’s reward, not a sixth collectible somewhere on the mountain.

Mission 4 — Big Bob-omb’s Revenge

Climb back to the summit as Mario, or wear the red cap available on the way. This rematch changes Big Bob-omb’s weakness. Run around his back, pick him up and throw him onto the summit floor.

Keep the throw inside the arena. Sending him over the cliff does not count toward the three required hits and only prolongs the battle. After each landing, give him room to stand up, circle behind him again and repeat. Yoshi’s first-mission bomb-spitting routine is not the solution to this rematch.

Mission 5 — Mario Wings to the Sky

Bring Mario and activate the castle’s ? Switch first. Ask the Bob-omb Buddies to open the cannons. Use the cannon on the gray mound to reach the floating island, then collect the feather from its red ? Block.

Enter the island’s cannon and aim through the floating rings. You need the single coin in the center of each of the five rings; collecting only the surrounding coins does not activate a secret. Adjust Mario’s flight to pass through the missing centers, or return to the island for another shot. Follow the star’s appearance on the map once all five secrets are registered.

Mission 6 — Find the 8 Red Coins

Ask the starting Bob-omb Buddy to mark all eight Red Coins. Collect the one above the moving lifts left of the first bridge, the one on the gray mound and the one on Chain Chomp’s post. Two more are together by the four wooden posts beyond the second bridge.

Check beneath the stone bridge for the sixth and the grassy slope opposite that bridge for the seventh. The eighth is on the floating island, reached with a cannon. Return to the star marker after collecting the complete set. Give Chain Chomp time to lunge before jumping onto its post.

Mission 7 — Behind Chain Chomp’s Gate

Approach Chain Chomp’s wooden post, wait for the chain to stretch away from your route and jump onto the post. Ground-pound it to drive it farther into the ground. Repeat until the post is fully sunk, moving away between attempts if the next lunge is already starting.

The freed Chomp smashes the gate behind it. Enter the opening and collect the star. You are releasing the chain rather than defeating Chomp by jumping on its body. A hit near the post can also knock off a borrowed character cap, so retrieve it only after moving out of the next lunge.

100-Coin Star

Collect the ground-level coins, defeat the Goombas and Bob-ombs, break suitable blocks and circle or pound the wooden posts for their coins. The Red Coin route adds sixteen to the counter. Leave enough easy coins near a safe landing for the final part of the run.

The island cannon and airborne coin rings supply the remaining coins; Mario’s feather makes these easier. A Mushroom’s giant form can increase the coins gained from defeated enemies. Collect the Power Star when the course counter reaches one hundred; coins carried into a different course do not count toward this target.
