Mission 1 — Go on a Ghost Hunt

Enter the courtyard as a character who can defeat Boos, attack the large Boo carrying the cage and enter Big Boo’s Haunt. In the mansion, defeat the five ordinary Boos on the ground floor, including the rooms reached from the side or back of the house.

Face away to make a Boo approach, then turn your movement into a ground-pound as it becomes vulnerable. When Big Boo appears in the main hall, hit him three times in the same way. The stairs rise after his defeat, opening the mansion’s upper floor as well as awarding this star.

Mission 2 — Ride Big Boo’s Merry-Go-Round

Go into the small wooden shed outside the mansion and take its lift down. Follow the lower passage to the merry-go-round and keep out of the fire jet’s reach.

Defeat the ordinary Boos as they emerge, then fight the larger Boo that follows. Three ground-pounds finish the boss. Keep moving with the rotating floor so you do not wait directly in the flame’s path. The star comes from completing this basement fight, not from repeating the main-hall ghost hunt.

Mission 3 — Secret of the Haunted Books

Reach the upstairs corridor after clearing the first mission and enter the library through the second door from the left. Move past the attacking books to the three protruding books at the end.

Strike them in the order middle, right, left. The shelf slides away to reveal the exit leading to the star. A wrong order produces another hazard rather than opening the passage. Move back to a safe spot before resetting your position, then repeat the sequence deliberately instead of hitting all three rapidly.

Mission 4 — Seek the 8 Red Coins

Use Mario with active ? Blocks. On the ground floor, collect the coin behind the piano, the two on the library shelves and the one in the right-hand room. Upstairs, search the grate room, beneath the coffins and the room with the trap floor.

The DS version’s eighth coin floats high in the main lobby. Use Mario’s Power Flower to rise to it; searching every coffin again will not reveal it. Follow the Bob-omb Buddy’s markers for the remaining rooms, then return to the star marker after collecting all eight.

Mission 5 — Big Boo’s Balcony

As Mario, enter the upper-right room and use its Power Flower to float up to the attic doorway. Cross the attic to the outside balcony and defeat Big Boo with three well-spaced ground-pounds.

The star appears on the roof above the balcony. Use Mario’s balloon transformation again to reach that height rather than making repeated uncontrolled jumps on the slippery roof slope. Make sure you return to the correct ? Block with enough time to float up and land beside the star.

Mission 6 — Eye to Eye in the Secret Room

Bring Luigi and reach the attic from the upper-right room. Use the Power Flower to become invisible, then pass through the large Boo picture in the attic wall before the effect expires. This is the Boo image, not the separate Luigi rescue painting.

In the hidden room, circle Big Mr. I without breaking his gaze until he spins out and disappears. Collect the star afterward. Running directly at his eye does not defeat him; maintain a circular path and keep enough room to avoid being pinned against the wall.

Mission 7 — Switch Star in the Basement

Use Wario in the basement and break the Black Brick covering the Star Switch. Find the sphere at the far end of the route before activating the timer. Clear the route of distractions, then press the switch and hurry to the star.

A nearby character cap can provide a faster runner after the block is gone, but do not spend the entire countdown searching for it. The Black Brick is the part that requires Wario’s strength; ordinary punching characters cannot expose this switch.

100-Coin Star

Choose a later mission so the mansion has its fuller enemy population. Defeat Mr. I and the Boos for their Blue Coins, collect the spider coins and gather the Red Coins while moving through the rooms. Each Blue Coin is worth five.

Search the attic for its Blue Coin Switch and learn the temporary coin route before pressing it. Mario helps reach the lobby’s high red coin; Luigi is convenient in several cramped rooms. Avoid taking another Power Star before your counter reaches one hundred, and collect the coin star at its appearance point before leaving the mansion.
