Tall, Tall Mountain

Course 12 — Tall, Tall Mountain. The small mushroom-platform painting is upstairs behind the central staircase. Use the mountain paths for the summit, cannon and secret slide. This chapter covers the seven named DS missions and the separate 100-Coin Star.

Mission 1 — Scale the Mountain

Follow the mountain path past the mushroom platforms and Monty Moles. Cross the log, climb past the rolling balls and long-jump the wide gap before Fwoosh. Turn the camera before the jump so the far landing is clear.

Continue through the grassy upper path and over the waterfall bridge to the summit star. Ukkiki can steal your cap, and Fwoosh can blow it away, so recover it when necessary. Do not mistake the narrow lower mushroom with a visible star marker for the summit route; that belongs to a different objective.

Mission 2 — Mystery of the Monkey Cage

Climb to the summit and catch the Ukkiki there. Agree to let him go, then follow him down toward the cage above the waterfall. Speak to him again when he stops by it.

He releases the cage and the star becomes available below. Descend along solid ledges rather than leaping blindly after the falling object. This is the helpful summit monkey’s task; the cap-stealing Ukkiki farther down the mountain is a separate encounter.

Mission 3 — Scary ’Shrooms, Red Coins

Take the first four Red Coins from the mushroom platforms near the lower part of the climb. Set up each jump from a stable center so you do not slide off a cap’s edge.

The remaining four are on the ledges and vines beside the Monty Moles farther up. Collect them as you climb, then descend to the star marker on the mushroom platform. The map helps locate the last ledge, but check the height before jumping toward it. You do not need to complete the hidden slide for this red-coin star.

Mission 4 — Mysterious Mountainside

Climb past the rolling balls and Fwoosh. Look for the wall beside the upper coin trail: it ripples like a painting when you touch it. Jump through to enter the secret mountain slide.

Control your speed around the sharp corners and choose a continuous track at the branching section. Keep away from the misleading path that ends in a fall. At the bottom, use the exit to reach the outside ledge with the star. If collecting the one-hundred-coin star on the slide too, pick it up before leaving this separate area.

Mission 5 — Blast to the Lonely Mushroom

Find the Bob-omb Buddy on the small platform below the bridge near the middle-mountain Ukkiki and ask him to open the cannon. Return to the lower mushroom-platform area and stand on its small teleport platform to reach the cannon ledge.

Enter the cannon and aim for the isolated mushroom holding the star. Allow enough height for the arc but do not overshoot its narrow cap. The mushroom’s center is the target; its stem does not provide a safe landing. Mario’s controls make the approach familiar, but the essential preparation is opening the cannon first.

Mission 6 — 5 Secrets of the Mountain

Use Mario with active ? Blocks. Take the feather near the upper part of the course and fly through the coin rings circling the mountain. Touch the single center coin of each of the five rings to register its secret.

The star appears after all five centers are collected. Ordinary ring-edge coins do not advance the hidden counter. The DS version uses this aerial task instead of the N64 waterfall-switch star in that slot. Renew the feather for another pass if needed rather than trying to collect a high ring with an ordinary jump.

Mission 7 — Breathtaking View from the Bridge

Bring Wario and climb to the waterfall near the summit. Reach the ledge behind the water and find the Black Brick covering the star.

Break that brick with Wario and collect the reward. This DS version needs his strength; merely stepping on a nearby switch or following the older N64 waterfall instructions does not remove the obstacle. Approach the ledge carefully from the bridge route and line up the landing before dropping behind the falls.

100-Coin Star

Collect the mountain’s Red Coins, enemy coins and blocks while climbing. In the DS version there are enough outdoor coins to reach one hundred without relying on the hidden slide, so clear the accessible enemies and ledges methodically.

The slide can add a large reserve if you prefer, but plan the threshold before entering: a star that appears inside the slide must be collected there before leaving. Finish the count on a stable outdoor platform when possible. Do not use the lower N64 outdoor coin total as a DS limit; the remake adds supplies.

Continue your star collection
