Boo's Boneyard Galaxy

Super Mario Galaxy guide hub

Racing the Spooky Speedster

You unlock the Boo’s Boneyard Galaxy after completing the mission “Luigi and the Haunted Mansion” in the Ghostly Galaxy and the mission “Gateway’s Purple Coins” in the Gateway Galaxy. Then a Hungry Luma appears outside the Gateway Galaxy dome, which you have to feed with a total of 1,200 Star Bits. Upon your arrival in the new galaxy, you land on a small planet whose surface looks like a giant skull. Before you enter the planet, you can collect additional Star Bits in the two large eye sockets. For this purpose, executes a rotary attack within the depression, whereupon three Star Bits appear. Then you walk across the surface of the skull to the orange warp tube at its highest point. Jump in to reach the interior of the planet.

After leaving the tube, you end up in a large two-dimensional cave system traversed by bones, crystal walls and several abysses. First runs the small ramp down and collects the spirit mushroom. As Boo Mario, you can hover up by repeatedly pressing the A button and become invisible for a short time with a spin. In this form, Mario can fly through the transparent crystal walls that block the further path. Stand in front of the first crystal wall on the right, activate your invisibility with a spin and float through it. Behind it is the Boo Race King, against whom you have already competed in the Ghostly Galaxy. Speak to him and accept his new challenge. This time the race is not leading through open space, but through a long cave labyrinth. Your destination is at the bottom of the cave system. The Raser King takes about 53 seconds to reach the finish line, so you have to get down as quickly as possible.

As soon as the race begins, you first drop down through the narrow opening and then hold yourself to the right. In front of you are several transparent crystal walls that you can cross with the invisibility capability of Boo Mario. Activates the spin just before the first wall and floats through it. Directly behind is an optional 1-up mushroom that you can collect when flying by. Then crosses the next crystal wall and touches the large yellow? coin. This activates a fan which blows a strong air flow through the shaft. Let yourself be carried away by the current and move as far as possible in its center so that you are quickly transported downwards. Try to collide with the side walls as little as possible during the flight, as you lose speed significantly. You can always float up again as Boo Mario, but for the race it is cheaper to drop as long as possible and to correct the altitude only for obstacles.

After the first air shaft, the path leads you further to the right. Touches the next? coin to turn on another fan, and uses its gust of wind for the next section. Along the way, you will encounter several springy opponents who throw Boo Mario back when touched. They do not cause direct damage, but they slow you down significantly. Therefore floats as centrally as possible through the corridor and avoids them early up or down. Further forward, you reach a group of rotating bones that block the direct path. Here you can either float between the bones or use the crystal wall on the right as a shortcut. For the faster way, you should stay right, become invisible with a spin and fly directly through the crystal wall. Behind it is another? coin, with which you activate a fan, which again transports you down at high speed.

In the next section, the shape of the cave system changes and several crystal walls appear directly on your trajectory. Keep yourself as far to the right as possible and activate your invisibility just before the next obstacle. You can pass several walls without having to search for an opening. However, pay attention to the resilient opponents who can move between the walls and push you back when touched. Further down the path leads through a narrow shaft with several movable obstacles. Here you should drop down as quickly as possible and only press the A button if you have to dodge a bone or a wall. Touch the other yellow? coins along the way so that the fans turn on and speed you through the longer sections. Especially the fans on the right side are helpful, as they transport you directly towards the next shaft and save some detours over the side corridors.

In the last part of the race, the path becomes a bit narrower again. In front of you are several vertical crystal walls that block the direct descent. Do not try to fly around them, but activate your invisibility with a spin and float right through it. Once you have passed the last wall, you let yourself fall further down as quickly as possible. There, the finish line is located on a wide platform, the bottom of which is covered with bone. You must reach them before the Boo Race King. If you use most fans and have avoided longer detours, you should stay well below his race time. Once you are the first to cross the finish line, the Race King acknowledges your achievement and hands you the Power Star. This completes the only mission of the Boo’s Boneyard Galaxy.

Tip for a particularly fast run: The most important shortcut is to stay as consistently as possible on the right side of the cave. Many of the crystal walls can be easily crossed as Boo Mario, avoiding the longer detours through the bone platforms. You should take the large? coins with you as much as possible, as the activated fans provide a considerable speed boost. Unlike ordinary jump passages, there is little point in constantly pressing the A button. Instead, drop freely down as often as possible and use the ability to fly mainly for short direction changes. You can also take the optional 1-up mushroom without significantly extending the race. If you miss Star Bits or ordinary coins on the way, you do not have to turn back during the race. After the race, you can continue to explore the cave and collect the remaining items.
