Gateway Galaxy introduces the gravity controls and contains two stars: the opening Grand Star and the later Purple Coin challenge. The second visit is part of the observatory’s later progression.
Grand Star Rescue
Follow the opening route after the attack on Peach’s Castle. On the small starting planet, catch the three Star Bunnies; follow their hints around the pipe, grass and crater rather than chasing blindly. Speak to Rosalina to receive the spin, then break the crystal and use the Launch Star. Collect the five Star Chips on the next planet while avoiding the rolling boulders. Use the completed Launch Star, defeat the large Goomba to obtain the key and free the trapped Luma. Enter the pipe into the Grand Star chamber. Run over every blue Flipswitch Panel to turn it yellow, keeping clear of the moving electric barriers. Once all panels are active, the Grand Star is released.
Gateway’s Purple Coins
Return through the Gate after the Engine Room’s boss progression. Speak to Rosalina and the red Luma to begin the 100-coin challenge. The Red Star allows Flying Mario to take off with a jump and spin. Collect the coins on the ground first, then follow the airborne groups with controlled flights. Point Mario towards the next group before accelerating, and land to renew the flight rather than forcing a poor approach. Circle the entire planet and check both the low ground and the rings above it. Collect all 100 Purple Coins and return for the Power Star.
Red Star access
Completing the Purple Coin mission makes a Red Star available at the Comet Observatory. Flying Mario helps with observatory exploration; it does not replace the galaxy-specific power-ups or award additional stars by itself.
