Chapter 1-1: The Adventure Unfolds

Super Paper Mario guide hub

In chapter 1-1, you learn the most important skill of Super Paper Mario: the change between the two-dimensional and three-dimensional world. Therefore, look around regularly in both views – many paths, blocks and collectibles are only visible from a certain perspective.

The first steps

Run right and jump to the first Goomba. Along the way, you can start the question mark blocks and collect the coins and the mushroom.

Shortly afterwards you will reach a green warp pipe. Jump in and take the mushroom mix with you in the underground room. The Heilitem restores ten strength points and can be useful to you later.

Back on the surface, it continues to the right. The little red squiglie can withstand two hits. Therefore, jump twice on the opponent or attack him quickly one after the other.

In front of Bestovius‘ house is a storage block. Use it before you enter the building.

Bestovius and the Third Dimension

In the first room, there seems to be no further door. Point the Wii at the screen and use tap to examine the center of the wall.

Tippe makes a hidden door visible. Select it with the pointer and enter the room behind it.

There you meet Bestovius, the master of dimensional change. He first asks for 10,000 coins for his help.

Reject the first offer. Then he wants to have all the coins that you are wearing right now.

You can accept this second offer. If you want to keep your coins, you also reject them. Bestovius finally teaches Mario the dimensional change for free.

From now on you can switch between 2D and 3D with the appropriate button.

Note: In the 3D view, the dimensional strip slowly empties. Change back to 2D in time. If the bar is completely used up, Mario loses a force point.

In Bestovius‘ room, switch to the 3D view. Behind the vessels you will find a tank kick and another mushroom mix.

Go back to the previous room and stay in 3D. Between the two doors lies a blast of fire in a previously invisible niche.

Then leave the house in the 2D view.

The Squiglie Card

Directly in front of the house you can collect an easily overlooked catch card.

Jump first to the storage block and from there to the roof of Bestovius‘ house. On the upper brick block is the squiglie card.

Catch cards increase the damage that Mario causes against the enemy type shown. It is therefore worth collecting as many of them as possible.

Back to the locked door

Change right next to Bestovius‘ house into the 3D view. There appear three blocks of question marks that were not visible in the two-dimensional world.

The outer blocks contain coins. In the middle block are buddy capsules that make several small helpers appear around Mario.

Then walk left back to the door, which is surrounded by numerous blocks.

In 2D, the door looks completely locked. Change to 3D and you will see that there is enough space between the blocks to pass through.

Go between them and enter the door.

Hidden Paths in the Third Dimension

In the next area, several Goombas and Koopas are waiting.

If you jump on a Koopa clan clan clan, he retreats into his tank. Subsequently, step against the tank to meet other opponents on the way.

After a short time, a high green warp pipe blocks the way. Switch to the 3D view and walk past its side.

Behind the warp pipe is the Goomba card. Collect them before returning to the 2D view.

The next two tubes are worth a further switch to 3D. Behind a warp pipe an additional Goomba is waiting. You will also find a hidden question mark block with a mushroom.

Continue to the right.

The first abyss you cross in the 2D view over the floating stone blocks. Pay attention to the opponents on the small island.

Shortly afterwards you reach a much wider gorge. In 2D, no path seems to lead to the other side.

Change to 3D. To the left of the abyss is now a narrow path across the hills in the background visible.

Follow the path, defeat the hidden Goomba and switch back to the 2D view on the other side.

Enter the next door.

Over the high rock faces

In the following section, you will encounter a Spinia-Oing. If you jump on him, he divides into several smaller opponents.

Keep moving and jump on the small pieces one after the other until all are defeated.

In front of the high rock face stands a springboard. Jump on it and press the jump button again at the right moment to be thrown particularly high on the wall.

Alternatively, you can switch to the 3D view behind the wall. There is also a hidden question mark block with buddy capsules.

Follow the path to the right and jump over the next opponents and blocks.

A little later you stand in front of a particularly high and seemingly insurmountable wall.

Switch to the 3D view. The wall is much narrower than it looks in 2D, and you can just walk past its side.

Inside or behind the wall are numerous squiglies. If you defeat them all, you get a large number of points at the beginning of the game.

On the other hand, you switch back to 2D.

Near the stairs there is also a hidden block with a mushroom. Jump over the visible blocks until the invisible block appears.

Then go through the next door.

Go with the mega-star

In the last section, several piranha plants grow from green tubes.

Wait for a warp pipe until the plant is gone in it again, and then jump over it quickly.

You can also traverse the area in the 3D view and walk past the tubes laterally.

In the next question mark block is a mega-star.

If you touch him, Mario temporarily turns into a giant pixel Mario and is almost invulnerable.

Just run right and roll down all opponents, tubes and obstacles. For destroyed enemies and objects, you get numerous points.

At the end of the path, you reach the large block of stars, with which the chapter is completed.

However, do not hit him immediately.

The Koopa clan clan clan card

Immediately before the star block, switch to the 3D view again.

On the left or behind the rock face, a narrow secret passageway becomes visible.

Follow the path to a treasure chest. It contains the Koopa clan clan clan card.

Then return to the star block and jump it.

This concludes Chapter 1-1 and opens the way to Chapter 1-2: Mount Lineland.
