Piccolo is one of the optional Pixl in Super Paper Mario. To get the musical pixel, you’ll need to complete a longer exchange task that will take you through Flipside, Flopside and several sections of Chapter 1.
The task can be started once you have used the sixth Pure Heart. This is possible after the conclusion of Chapter 5. Piccolo is not needed for the main story, but belongs to a complete Pixl collection.
Rewards
After completing the task, you will receive:
- The Optional Pixl Piccolo
- Access to two special blocks of music
- More Catch Cards in Flipside and Flopside
- one way to remove many negative states immediately
Required conditions
- Chapter 5 must be completed.
- The sixth Pure Heart must have been inserted.
- Flopside must be fully accessible.
- A retreat tube is recommended, as you have to travel several times in Chapter 1.

| 5 | Merlumina | Chapter 1-4 | Turn the paper into an autograph. |

| 7 | Bestovius | Chapter 1-1 | Exchange the “you-know-already” for the practice session. |
| 8 | Merluvlee | Flipside | Exchange the exercise unit for the crystal ball. |
| 9 | Merlee | Flopside | Exchange the crystal ball for the house key. |
| 10 | Piccolo | Closed House in Flopside | Open the great treasure chest and get Piccolo. |
Step 1: Talk to Merlee in Flopside
Go to Merlee’s Fortune House in Flopside. Do not speak to them over the crystal ball, otherwise they will only be offered their normal service.
Instead, jump over the crystal ball or switch to the 3D view and run on Merlee’s side of the counter. Speak to them directly from there.
Merlee tells you that she needs a new crystal ball. A matching ball should be at Merluvlee in Flipside.
Step 2: Visit Merluvlee in Flipside
Return to Flipside through Mirror Hall and seek out Merlieblicha Fortune House.
Again, you have to get to the other side of the crystal ball and address Merluvlee directly. A normal conversation from the customer side does not start the task.
Merluvlee is ready to give up her crystal ball. In return, however, she would like to receive a practice session from Bestovius.
Step 3: Bestovius in Chapter 1-1
Return to the Dimension Tower and enter the red door to Chapter 1. Then select Chapter 1-1.
Cross the first section of Lineland Street until you reach Bestovius‘ house. It’s on the right end of the area.
Talk to Bestovius and ask him about the exercise session. He wants to give it to you, but first he asks for a personal item that he borrowed from Uncle Passauf.
This item bears the conspicuous name:
You know, already
Step 4: Uncle Passauf in Chapter 1-2
Use the retreat tube and then re-enter the door to Chapter 1. Select Chapter 1-2 this time.
Run to Yold Town. Uncle Passauf lives in the last house on the right side of the village.
Speak to him about what you know. He does not want to release the object until you fulfill a personal wish.
Uncle Passauf regularly dreams of Merlumina and wants to own her autograph. He hands you a sheet of paper on which Merlumina is to sign.
Step 5: Finding Merlumina in Chapter 1-4
Return to the Dimension Storm and start chapter 1-4.
Cross the Yold Ruins completely until you reach the last room behind the former Fracktail battle arena. There is the star block, with which the chapter is usually ended.
Do not jump immediately against the star block.
Stay in the room for a few moments. After a short time, Merlumina appears again. Speak to them and listen to their longer narrative.
Merlumina then signs the paper. The object thus automatically becomes the autograph.
Now the way back begins. You must visit all previously visited people in reverse order.
Step 6: Bringing the autograph to Uncle Passauf
Use the retreat tube and start chapter 1-2. Run back to Yold Town and enter Uncle Passauf’s house.
Give him Merlumina’s autograph. Uncle Passauf is thrilled and gives you in return the object that Bestovius had requested:
You know, already
The object is obviously a CD. However, the exact content is not revealed in the game.
Step 7: Bringing the You-Know-Already to Bestovius
Returns to chapter 1-1 and visits Bestovius in his house at the end of the first section.
Give it to him, you know. Bestovius keeps his promise and gives you the exercise unit.
Step 8: Bringing the exercise session to Merluvlee
Leave Chapter 1 and return to Flipside. Go to Merluvlee and speak to her again from her side of the crystal ball.
Give the exercise session. In return, you will receive the crystal ball desired by Merlee.
Step 9: Bring the Crystal Ball to Merlee
Travel through Mirror Hall to Flopside and visit Merlee’s Fortune House again.
Jump back to her side of the counter and address her directly. Give Merlee the crystal ball.
As a thank you will receive a house key. This opens the previously closed house in Flopside, in which Piccolo is enclosed.
Step 10: Open the locked house
Go to 1. Level of Flopside and seeks out the locked house near the card store.
If a wall or railing blocks your direct path, move with Mario into the 3D view and walk behind the obstacle.
Use the house key on the door and enter the building. Inside is a large treasure chest.
Open it so that Piccolo joins the group.
Piccolos skills
Piccolo plays his own melody for each of the four heroes. The music has several special effects.
Remove negative conditions
Piccolo can eliminate many curses and other negative conditions. This includes, inter alia, the effects of:
- Miseria
- Amnesia
- Obesia
- Reversia
If your movement has been slowed down, the controls reversed, the jump height reduced or a character ability blocked, you should use Piccolo.
Dissolve special music blocks
In Flipside and Flopside are special blocks with a musical note symbol. Stand immediately in front of such a block and use Piccolo.
The melody makes the block disappear and releases a hidden treasure chest.
| Location | Rewards |
|---|---|
| Flipside, outer region of the upper plane | Merlee fishing card |
| Flopside, outer area of upper plane | Nolrem fishing card |
euthanize chain band
When fighting the chain gang in Chapter 7-2, you can use Piccolos music. The three chain dogs fall asleep temporarily, which makes the fight much easier.
New sounds for the heroes
As long as Piccolo is equipped, some of the sounds of the playable characters change. These include, for example:
- Mario’s jumping noise
- The noise when landing on an opponent
- Bowser’s fire breath
- Further movement and attack effects
The Melodies of the Four Heroes
| Hero | Style of melody |
|---|---|
| Mario | A classic, cheerful melody. |
| Princess Peach | A calm and gentle melody. |
| Bowser | A strong rock tune. |
| Luigi | A relaxed jazz tune. |
Can Piccolo be missed?
No. The task remains available until the main story is completed. You can therefore also get Piccolo after the credits.
Merely the beginning of the task is easy to miss, as Merlee only asks for the crystal ball if you address her from her side of the counter.
