Chapter 1-2: Afoot in the Foothills

Super Paper Mario guide hub

The shortcut behind the mountain

Run right from the start until you reach the flat, rectangular rocks just before the big mountain. Switch there to the 3D view and follow the narrow path behind the mountain. At the end you will discover a chest with the parakoopa card. Open it and then go through the nearby door.

This door serves as a shortcut and leads you directly to the next part of the section. After landing, you hit from below against the left block. Then a ladder appears, over which you reach the top.

Go back to the 3D view at the top. This makes several question mark blocks visible, which you can use as stairs. Jump to the higher stone blocks and follow them to the right.

Tip: At the point where you have to jump to the top row of blocks, there is a hidden block in the 3D view. Push it from below so that another ladder appears. It leads to a small bonus area with numerous coins.

Afterwards, drop down again and follow the path to the steep mountain slope. There are large, spiky stone rollers rolling towards you. They cannot be defeated. Therefore, stay in the 3D view and switch between the individual running tracks to avoid them. Arriving at the top, you go through the door.

Ruber and the First Bridge

In the next section you stand before a large gorge. Since the bridge is missing, you can not go further here at first. Go to the green warp pipe and jump in. Mario then lands in the background of the landscape.

Run to the left and enter the house there. Climb the stairs to the upper floor and switch to the 3D view. On the bed, you now discover Ruber who is accidentally stuck in the third dimension.

Speak to him, stand right next to him and switch back to the 2D view. As a result, you take Ruber back to his usual dimension. As a thank you, he wants to open the bridge – but only after you have answered his color question.

Choose the answer “Red”. With the other answers, Ruber gets angry and throws you out of his house. If you answered correctly, he presses the switch and makes the bridge appear.

Leave the house, run to the right and return to the foreground via the warp pipe. Cross the new bridge and use the Save Block on the other side. Then you reach Yold Town.

Old Stone Town’s Hidden Secrets

In the middle of Yold Town stands a small pile of four stone blocks. Switch to the 3D view next to it to discover a warp pipe hidden behind it. In the underground space, numerous coins are waiting for you. Also look around there in 3D, because some coins are behind each other and are not visible in the normal view.

After that, return to the city and use the block pile to jump onto the roof of the left house. Jump from roof to roof to the right. On one of the last roofs you will find the Poptor card.

Then enter the third house from the left, which stands directly to the right of the block pile. The room seems empty at first. However, switch to the 3D view to discover another warp pipe behind the wall. Jump in.

Under the city, several large stone pads await you. Do not try to walk among them. Instead, switch to the 3D view and walk past them sideways. Behind the last stone rammer you reach a door.

In the following room it does not seem to go on at first. Point the Wii at the screen and examine the wall with the star symbol with Tippi. Tippi makes an invisible door visible there, through which you can continue.

In the next room, the way back is blocked. Open the large chest and free the Pixl Thoreau. He can grab certain opponents and objects and throw them through the area.

Try his ability immediately: pick up the white block next to the chest with Thoreau. Stand under the blue switch on the blanket, jump up and throw the block against it. Once the switch has been hit, the output opens again.

Now return to Yold Town through the underground rooms. Enter the fourth and last house from the left and talk to Uncle Passauf. After seeing Thoreau, he recognizes Mario as the wanted hero and informs the second bridge guard.

Leave the house and jump into the green warp pipe at the right end of the city. In the background you run to the right and enter the house there. Talk to Gruber on the upper floor. He presses his switch and makes the second bridge appear.

Gruber also asks you a color question. Which answer you choose does not matter this time – he is not satisfied with any of them. Before you leave the house, you should switch to the 3D view next to his bed. There is the hidden Ruber & Gruber card.

Return to the foreground via the Warp Pipe, cross the second bridge and strike against the Star Block. This concludes Chapter 1-2.
